Pahana is a language-learning app for Sri Lanka. It starts with English for people whose first language is Sinhala or Tamil: short, interactive lessons with feedback in the learner’s own language, a voice tutor for real speaking practice, and a plan that adapts to each learner, from a young child to a grandparent. The guide is Dilu, a baby grizzled giant squirrel, Sri Lanka’s national animal. Pahana is coming soon to iPhone and Android.
Long
Pahana is a language-learning app for Sri Lanka, made for everyone: a schoolchild, a working adult, a grandparent who wants to speak English with family abroad. It starts with English for people whose first language is Sinhala or Tamil, and it is built so that more languages can be added later.
Lessons are short, interactive and gamified. Every attempt gets immediate feedback in Sinhala, Tamil or English, and a voice tutor lets every learner practise speaking. A short placement finds the right starting point on a track from Beginner to Advanced, mapped to the CEFR levels A1 to C1, and each learner’s plan then adapts as they go. The app changes its presentation for children and for older learners, with picture-first lessons and larger type.
The name comes from පහන (pahana), Sinhala for “lamp”: the light of understanding. It is never drawn as a lamp. Instead, the tail tip of Dilu, Pahana’s baby giant squirrel guide, glows warm yellow at the moment a learner understands something. Dilu is a curious little chatterbox who collects words the way other squirrels collect nuts, and is never too proud to say “let’s try that again”.
Pahana is made in Sri Lanka and is coming soon to iPhone and Android.
